Blog Post #33: Songs

Since my film will feature a song, I want to go over some songs that I find interesting with descriptions and my ideas behind them all. I want to look for a song that has pauses in it, along with faster moments and moments where it sounds like a regular song.

These requirements may seem odd, but I'm basing my song based off of my storyboard since the music will be representing transition.

Here are the songs I'm thinking of using:

Dealer- Lana Del Rey

Explanation: I want to use this song specifically because of the lyrics. The lyrics say "Please don't try my father either. He ain't been home for years" which I think would accurately represent the storyline of my main character in the film. Also, the lyrics continue on with the almost jazz music and they say "I check it, I wreck it, I turn it around." I think that these lyrics will help my film with the transitioning state because it can come off as repetitive, just like how schoolwork and the main character's thoughts are.

I Know It's Over- The Smiths

Explanation: This song would be interesting to see in a film, especially since it's a more monotonous song.  However, the lyrics saying "Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" multiple times can be similar to what is physically happening in the film.

anything- Adrianne Lenker

Explanation: I thoroughly enjoy listening to this song due to the chimes and many instrumental noises, which can make audience members feel like they're dreaming due to the harmony in this song. While it isn't a Beethoven song, it creates a lot of meaning with the instruments alone. However, I want to use it mainly because of the lyrics. They say "Christmas Eve with your mother and sis. Don't wanna fight but your mother insists." I think that these lyrics would be beneficial for my film, and that they will add creativity to it.

Overall, I want to use "anything" by Adrianne Lenker because there is so much meaning and growth in this song, that it will be the most suitable for my short film, especially towards the end of it.
