Blog Post #4: Psychological Drama Genre Conventions

The psychological drama genre conventions often lead with the struggles that characters find themselves in. I want to use this genre because it will allow me to guide audiences through the development of my main character. The conventions of the genre include internal conflict, unreliable narration, tension building, open-ended plots, character driven journeys, and symbolism.

I want to include a lot of internal conflict, depicting my character as a person who may not be completely stable. I want to create overlapping plot elements that confuse audiences, making the film more interesting. I also want to gradually build the tension in the short film because I do not want the film to completely fit into the action genre.

I want to create an open-ended plot due to the interest that audiences will have after watching the film; they would want to learn about what actually happened- they don't want to get left off on a cliffhanger. Also, my characters would want to get better and fully understand themselves, so creating their own experiences along with giving gestures towards symbolism would allow audiences to feel like the film is more personal to them.

Blog Post #3: Movie Clips (Genre)

To understand the genre and concept of what my movie should be, watching clips from comedy, action, and psychological movies will help me. I chose to use the movie Anger Management as the comedy, Gladiator 2 as the action, and To the Bone as the psychological.

Blog Post #2: Inspiration

For my Media Studies project, I constantly draw inspiration from A24 film productions. However, I want to talk about opening sequences for movies. I enjoyed Umbrella Academy, a Netflix TV show, just because of their plot twists, sequencing, and their transitions between titles. The common eye-match with objects in the show that transitions into a titling sequence.

For example, these are the titles that show the eye matches with a common object that the show associates with.

These titling sequences are something that I want to incorporate in my short film, using objects to represent the title and other events that happen in the film. While it isn't an entire film, the short film deserves the creative aspect that I can give to it through panning, action matching, and eye matching- along with editing.

Overall, I enjoy watching these, so why not use them myself? It would up the emotional value of my show, creating intrigue in audience members so that they feel like the film is more personal to them. Their ability to connect the two objects together will make them feel special and help them to understand and keep their concentration on a creative film that mine will be.

Blog Post #1: The Idea

Final Project Idea:

My final project idea is to create a short film featuring a teenage character who struggles with their identity and sexuality. This film will show the struggles that a questioning character has in high-school. I plan to use my friends and family in my film to demonstrate the many feelings that a growing teenager can have, especially when trying to figure out who they are as a person. I chose to use this idea because its something personal to me and its something that I'm very passionate about.

I want to include different stereotypes and show counter-stereotypes throughout the short film because I feel like it adds a more meaningful affect. Also, while the film seems very sad, I want to include a couple comedy snippets to lighten the mood. I want to show my editing skills through video elements like transitions and cool video effects.

I draw inspiration from A24, a film production company because of their interesting concepts and creative ways to represent stories.
